APOPO is an organization that helps save lives by training rats to find landmines that can hurt people.
The idea of using rats to find landmines came as a result of a search for a cheap and good mine detectors that can find both metal and plastic cased landmines.
SO WHY USE RATS OVER DOGS AND OTHER THINGS?
For years they mainly used dogs to find landmines, but now this project is finding rats are better - WHY?
Rats have a better sense of smell;
Rats are easy to tame, breed and train;
Rats are small, cheap, and easy to maintain and transport;
Rats are widespread and adapt easily to different environments;
Once taught, the animals love performing the same tasks, over and over again;
Rats like working with many different trainers, unlike dogs who only like one person at a time.
HOW CAN WE HELP SUPPORT THIS PROJECT AND HELP SAVE LIVES! YOU CAN ADOPT A RAT!!
